So true. They had a Discovery Channel special on that a few weeks ago... Very interesting...It is possible that the bird flu could mutate. If it becomes as bad as some scientist think then staying home may not be an option. If it becomes a pandemic then things will start coming to a halt.
Some ideas for keeping alert and aware of the situation...

I know Phoneman would agree with me on this one; the best way to get better prepared is to go out and simulate an emergency. Every year I participate in two events, one in the summer and one in the fall where the county Office of Emergency Management simulates a disaster of some kind. We're responsible for setting up backup communications for everything, and you learn by realizing what you've forgotten //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif One year I couldn't get a radio on the air because I was missing a certain type of adapter to make the cables fit - now I carry one with me. Another year I had to find someone that had a certain power connector for a gel cell...now I have a set of universal power plugs. Little things you learn in the field by going out and doing it, but you certainly don't want to find out when it's for real.
My organization has drills at least once a month if not two or three and we're always training up on other stuff. Like I said earlier, I went to Structural Collapse Medicine (R. I. G.) in OKC, and others such as Operational Emergency Medical Skills in Fla., Heavy Rescue course with the FDNY, Center for Sustainment of Trauma and Resuscitation Skills in Baltimore, and the Defense Reasearch and Development Course in Alberta Canada. All within the last 8 months, not to mention all of the in-house training we do...Some ideas for keeping alert and aware of the situation...

Thats cool that you have all that training and such. I hope and strive to be one of the few people that if you ever need to use your training for something major big that you dont have to use it on me, I will hopefully be totally self sufficient so it will make your job easier. True that... Take it from a person who saw the eye of the beast itself... there was not a snowball's chance in hell that ANYONE could have been prepared for that. or much else for that matter.no one really prepares...come on look what happened with katrina...we are not prepared to deal with any major catastrophe..

Sure you can prepare for small things like flat tires and such, but some of the more important things in life you cant really preparre for, like getting pulled over by the cops while youre drunk as ****, or sliding you brand new ride into a tree...
What im trying to say is, even though we think were prepared for stuff, we really arent, and kid ourselves thinking we are.
