I fold, because sometimes when I crumple, friction reveals a weak spoit in the wad, and creates an opening, which allows fecal matter to contact my hands.

Yeah, crumpling leaves too much of a chance to get some on your hands.

I must say though, sometimes in public bathrooms with that disgusting 1 ply stuff I'll do a crumple fold combo to soften it up a little. That stuffs like sandpaper!
