I would just pay the extra bills and get a fluke. Surely you could find a cheap (er) one used on eBay. They are bulletproof and worth the money.

 
i have 2 craftsmans (one about $40 and the professional model was $100). They both work great. I did get an extra set of fluke leads for the longer wires and sharper points.
