Distortion?

When setting amp gain and listening for distortion am I just listening for hissing in the background, like static? Or is there other distortion I should be listening for? I am new to this and have never set an amp before sorry if this question sounds really dumb.

you are most likely trying to hear clipping which can be hard to do. Try using a DMM to set your gains usuing the gain setting tutorial

it's like a buzzing sound and get yoru ears used to the clean sound then tothe clippin sound and it's a piece of cake, so if you use a 50hz test tone and it clips it will sound like 100 hz , high pitched sorta and if it's a 1khz tone it will sound like 2khz, you'll know when it clips usin that tone, just watch your ears //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
