Now i can not hear any distortion in my subs at this point (knock on wood), but my buddy told me that with the "loudness" control on the HU turned up to "high" that I was distorting my subs?

Is this true, or does anybody know what I am talking about?

Unless you have a terrible head unit, turning the loud button on will not automatically start to distort your subs. Remember, all the "loud" button is, is a preset EQ setting which boosts certain frequencies, including bass. Because of this, your amp will begin to clip sooner and thus begin to distort your subs sooner, but this is all dependent on the volume you are playing them at. If your amp began to clip at volume 45/50 without the loud button, it may start to clip at volume 38/50 with the loud button.

I have a Pioneer DEH 6700 MP head unit, so no i don't have a crappy head unit

And out of 50, i don't go above 30, so i think im good right?

The actual number you go up to on your head unit doesnt mean anything without taking into account what your gain on your amp is set to. Think of your amp's gain as the "master volume" and your head unit's volume as a secondary volume. Kind of like a certain wattage lightbulb attached to a dimmer switch. The wattage of the bulb is like your gain knob and the dimmer switch is like your head unit's volume knob. Nomatter how far you turn the dimmer switch, you can never get the light bulb any brighter than its wattage will allow.

(this isnt to say you should crank the gain all the way up... your amp has limits of operation that you cannot pass without clipping it and distorting your subs)

my gain isn't up that high, but at 30, my stock speaker start to distort, so thats why i don't go past that......there is kinda that point on the subs, where after u turn them up so loud, that u can't hear anything anyways, so turning them up past that would distort them...

or in other words, don't over set the gain, or crank the volume on the hu, or you will clip your subs?
