Difference in coil sizes..

I've always wanted to know what the benefits are to having a bigger diameter voice coil in a subwoofer. Like most have 3" coils but a few have 4" ones. Just wondering if the increased size helps with heat dissipation and power handling or what. Thanks in advance!

A larger coil will be able to take more power for a longer period of time. I am not really sure of the disadvantages to a larger coil other than cost.

generally weight, can affect inductance, etc.

also, power handling will be more affected by coil composition, winding width, and a myriad of other factors over plain coil size.

alot has to due with surface area and the amount of coil in the gap. id rather have a 8layer 3" coil than a 4" 4 layer. yes he 4" will have more surface area but the 3" 8 layer will have alot more wire and take more abuse....
