when you rip a cd or convert it you can change the quality.... 192 is mostly used... especially for eac/lame.. the original files are mostly wavs if you do a eac/lame rip the cd is copied to your pc in its uncompressed wav format then converted to mp3 or any other format and quality you choose from there

Lame works pretty good. I prefer 3rd party software however.
