determining the sq of a sub

is there a way to really tell the sq of a sub before buying it? i know you can tell alot about the subs spl potential by examining the t/s parameters. nothing i've read tells the sq potential from just examining the t/s parameters. im tired of going by the intranetz hypes on stuff, and want to see if theres a definite way of finding this out.

I've never really found anything indicative of the "SQ of a driver" in the parameters.

Being that SPL is more of a physical thing than subjective it's a little easier to read into that.

SQ is very subjective, and is really based on the motor of the driver and enclosure. That is my understanding of it.

you cant beat a used rl-p for $140 (or close) they get very loud and sound excellent. new @ $240 rthere is competition but a used rl-p cheap is going to be very hard to beat.

Compare via something like the great-8 and great-12 challenges. Side by side comparisons by people who had little or no personal interest in the results. That's about as good as it gets without auditioning them yourself.

Can you define what sounds "good" mathematically or scientifically? Its like asking if you can pre-determine the winner of the Miss America Pageant by reading their portfolios.
thats true, but i thought maybe there were numbers that MOST people associated with sq. like i'm wondering, if i wanted to compare the sq between, lets say a type r and an rlp, how much of a difference is there going to be? i mean, does one sub have a major advantage over the other? my question is how do you determine something like this, or is it pretty much buy and hope for the best.

The BEST way to determine the SQ of a sub, which is the most used method, is to go on a forum like this and ask people who have heard other people who have never owned the sub but have listened to it and read other people's reviews on the sub. Or ask those who own another sub but different series from the same manufacturer.

HAHA...who would actually do that...//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eyebrow.gif.fe2c18d8720fe8c7eaed347b21ea05a5.gif

well i think sq is a stupid things now that i think about it. i think rather than asking how the sq is. ask for what kinda sound your listening too. such as..... how tight does the type r hit, or hey, anyone know how clean the rl-p sounds?

people can answer that better because distortion is easier to hear and how tight a sub hits is a very easy thing to notice. so ask what your looking for. if you ask for sq people give there opinion which is very wierd in some cases. some people think a real muddy sub sound good and they therefore say the SQ is great....... for what they are looking for

Unfortunately (or fortunately) so much of how a sub 'sounds' is affected by the enclosure that this confuses the issue further. Multiply that times one man's acoustical perfection is another man's wtf was that and you end up with a whole lotta varying opinions.

I think most people who are into car audio enough to care about relatively minute sound differences between raw drivers is one willing to experiment until he finds what suits him. Maybe you simply hav this road ahead of you to travel, as many of us have before. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Squared subs has better sq than rounded ones, that's how you know the sq of a sub............................//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

the more sides the better it sounds - known fact

Also, the bigger it is, the less "tight" it sounds //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif
