DEH-24UB In a 2000 malibu

So to clarify I've done this before in a few cars but apparently this is a different beast with the Malibu's. I'm a mechanic but I'm always under the hood and never deal with electrical or anything like that. So if you could I'd appreciate it.

So i got a cheap little DEH-24UB Pioneer for my girlfriends car since hers just blew out. Clipped the heads and wired up everything according to the diagrams for both the malibu and the Pioneer.

So while I had the two front speakers hooked up I taped the wires and turned the car on. Then tested them. Worked great! Well finished setting the rest of them; Now I get NO sound what so ever. Back tracked and went back to my original starting point and hooked up just the front speakers like I had. Still no sound. Went back and found a different wiring diagram and tried it.... Still no luck. I'm like 100% sure I didn't it right. So i went to a place in town and the guy said the wiring harness is like $70. He then said he'd have to rewire the head back on for like 60. SO i just invested like $200 into a $90 stereo?

So can anyone throw up any advice or maybe I'm missing something?

I really need some help "sigh"

I'd appreciate anything you guys can offer up!

in my malibu (2004), i payed an additional 100.00 back in 2007 for the harness. That way, when i get a new deck, i can just swap them out. the harness makes everything real easy. 70 bucks isnt that bad from my experience. i do everything else in my car speakers /subs/amps/ but i let the pros do the head unit because it seemed like just getting the stock one out was going to be a hassle. Maybe someone else might be able to offer some insight. good luck !

I would think a mechanic would know how sensitive a vehicle's electrical system is and would be wiser. The proper harness could be found online for likely less than $40 and you would've just had to match colors and been done with it. As far as investing $200 into a $90 stereo, remember it was your choice to cut the harness and you could have bought a $400 stereo if it'd make you feel better. You should just pay the man to fix your screw up, or re-attach the factory harness yourself and restart the process from there. Depending on how much wire to have to work with in the harness side, you may find it easiest to cut a new one out of a junkyard car.

Once the stock harness is attached, you can use the proper harness, or just use the cheaper harness for older cavailiers and just have to wire a switched power source and possibly amp turn on if you have an amped system.

I bought my harness from Bestbuy and it's worked ever since, later today I can take a picture of my wiring for you if you'd like (I own a '99 malibu), it should explain itself, its just matching up the colors pretty easy.

If truly a 2000 the harness should not be that expensive. They might be trying to sell you the harness with the door chime module. On chevy it can be easy to confuse the left rear negative speaker wire (yellow) with another yellow wire in the harness. If you went back to the step where you only had the front speakers connected and you still get no sound I would imagine you blew the outputs of the deck. Go back with a dmm and double check the wires you had connected to the speaker outputs of the deck and make sure they are speaker wires and not something else. ALWAYS BUY THE HARNESS TO SAVE TIME AND POSSIBLY YOUR VEHICLE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM!
