Dayton Titanic MKIII 12" - Amp + box combo

Hi everyone ,

I recently started doing a bunch of research into upgrading the sound system in my 97 nissan maxima with the factory bose system and was pleased to find that all I need to do is some basic wiring in order to get my new head unit to work the with the bose speakers , each of which has an amp attached to it.

I decided on grabbing a clarion head unit, the DXZ785USB, but I also want One subwoofer with one amp in a nice box. Nothing ultra technical but definetly not bottom of the barrel either.

I'm feeling like for price and what I desire this is the perfect sub for the job :

[DAYTON TITANIC MKIII 12"]

does anyone have a box design and monoblock amp they suggest on pairing with this sub ??

I'm HOPING I can get away with spending less than 300 dollars on an amp. I'm not looking to win competitions but i'm certainly not looking to pair this sub with a piece of crap either.

seeing as i'm a novice at best in this area I was wondering if you guys could offer some advice so I dont royally f**k something up. Not that i'm half retarded but I do like to be thorough in my choices.

:::

Also I'm looking mainly to get down to 30hz because I listen to alot of electronic music that goes down to that level constantly. I'm looking more for clarity and response than overall loudness and boom. I like to crank my music, dont get me wrong , especially on the highway but again clarity and response over superloud neighborhood destruction which would probably get my system jacked anyways. I really dont want to spend more than 500 dollars total on a sub and amp combo that'll get me down to 30hz. If its possible

thanks for any input/links , ect ..

Dayton makes **** nice subs. the titanic should do well in a car in a good sized sealed box. put the rated 500 watts on it and you should get enough low end.

since the sub has a 4 ohm coil get a decent 2 channel and bridge it. thats the best way to go to power a 4 ohm coil.

a kicker zx500.2 or a zx550.2 will do well.

a little more money but an alpine pdx600.1 will do well too.

a well built prefab sealed box will do just fine as well. partsexpress.com sells nice little sealed boxes as well. sealed boxes are very forgiving in terms of size. the bigger you go the more low end you'll get. its as simple as that.

although i'd probably go bigger, this box is a good value and is well built. http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=260-644

i use the same box in my car (in the 10 inch version) and it works very well.

actually, if you look at the project ideas page they recommend a 1 cubic foot box to get a QTC of .707 so a 1.25 cubic foot will be good for it.

Hey TC,

Thanks for the reply and the suggestions ... I was actually thinking of grabbing one of those boxes off of partsexpress too ...

I posted on a couple of other forums and someone suggested being able to get a setup that'll go below 30hz for cheaper, easier and giving me more trunk space!

They suggested going with an Infinite Baffle setup with one of these :

http://www.aespeakers.com/drivers.php?driver_id=8

OR:

http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=295-455

stating that :

Both offer ~10dB more sensitivity at 20Hz than the 12" sealed box options above.

No box needed- just a good, solid, flat baffle up against the back seat.

Plenty of other speakers will work well in this arrangement too, but will usually require 2 x 10" or 12" woofers and won't quite have the 20Hz response of these purpose built IB woofers.

What do you guys think?

This sounds much better in my opinion ...

Those aespeakers look like some good subs i would go with those over the daytons
I'm curious to see what the price difference is ...

Also - After doing some other reading and finding out that I'm going to need an 8ohm amp to power these ****ers , i'm thinking of just keeping it simple and going back to the Dayton TITANIC MKIII 12".

I was looking at this 2 channel Lanzar amp to bridge:

http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=267-808

It says "500 watts max x 1 (4 ohm load bridged mono)" ... Should I expect the RMS to be lower just like in every other situation because i'm finding all the 2 channel amps I check out only list the "MAX" wattage in regards to them being bridged not the "RMS" of them being bridged. ???

dont buy that lanzer its POS, if you want to look for a decend car amp, partsexpress isnt gonna cut it, i would try woofersect.com or soniceletronic.com, i like woofersect, good people good service and good product but shop around other places and p.s. if you have the most basic of woodworking skills, i would build my own box theres plenty of people on here that can design you one, and it will sound better, and be cheaper, but whatever you want to do, you should
