WHATS A HOME THEATER?
well i have a 98 ford explorer 2 wheel drive 5.0 engine. and i recently did a tune up change the transmission oil and engine oil ran fine for like a week then it started doing what it was doing before. (also cleaned the mass air flow sensor) well at a light say it idles at 900 rpms then it drops really fast to say 500 rpms and shots up really fast back to 900 or so does it so fast you really got to concetrate to see it do that. whats weird is it does that sometimes and sometimes it can run like an hour and not do it. but another thing that is weird when it starts acting it up. it starts shifting like it im towing a car. transmission is fine. cause i would imagine if it where messing it up it would do it all the time not just when it starts dropping rpms.

another thing it does it idles a little rough and sometimes when you try to start it seems to take longer then other times like 2 seconds cranking one time and the next time 5-6 seconds of cranking and when it starts it starts like at a really low rpm like 300 and shoots up and then goes back down and then it evens out. fuel pressure is fine wires spark plugs coils all new. o 2 sensors read fine on the scanner. and no trbouble codes or check engine like comes up. the only thing the mechanic suggest is the mas air flow sensor but its 150$ and dont want to spend that and have the same thing happen

ok well im not sure if its the mass air flow sensor that is messed up just wanted to know everyones opinoins. i didnt belive the mechanic that the mass air flow controlled shifts o nteh tranmission but it does like explained here.

You could get a 302 in a 98 Explorer?
yes the gt40 mine just happens to have ported and forged pistons. cause i was crazy enough to shoot 180 shot before and drag race it. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/up2something.gif.dd110ecf3ae4b76050d87598f2f8de7c.gif thaats another thing we would have to run really really high octane for it not to denote. it would nock left and right and still does (without nitrous to)if floored to the floor. so i am leaning towards the mass air flow sensor but just want to know if anyone has had the same problems

sounds like a sensor problem, the GT40 doesn't have enough compression to really need to run high octane gas...if your pinging, the computer is not reading the knock sensor, to retard the timing...

well im leaning towards the mass air flow sensor since it controls timing air fuel ratio and transmission and its aobut the only sensor that can go bad and not trigger the check engine ligh( scanner brings up nothing and check engine light doesnt come on) im just gonna buy it tonight when my girl comes from work and ill put updates to see if it fixed it.

Ford's mainstay through the '90s used to be a 300cid inline 6. Wouldn't surprise me that they used a 302 on later models.
IMO one of the most foolish things Ford has ever done was discontinue the 4.9L I6 in favor of a v6 engine (4.2, I think?) for fuel economy reasons. Not too many full-size truck/van buyers are overly concerned about economy as they are about towing/hauling/cargo capacity.
Not heaps of top end out of those 300cid sixes but bottom-end torque for daaaaaaaayyysssssssss

The '76 F100 my dad had years ago had one...carbed.....3spd on the column. Was what I learned to drive a manual on //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

why did u clean the MAF? more importantly HOW did u clean it?
i forgot the name of it but you spray for electrical connectors can get it at radio shack. sometimes they get dirty and cause it to act crazy. but i think in my case that it works fine sometimes and sometimes not it probably shorted out cause of it being dirty in the past.
