ok, so here's the story. I had an issue with occasional engine whine coming from the rear speakers, accompanied by a weird clicking noise. There was still sound but it was really irritating. I swapped the front and rear rca's to see if the problem was iwth the speakers, or rca outputs, and the whine noise stopped, but instead of the whine, the front speakers now would intermittently not play any music (instead of whine, complete silence). So just to get rid of what seemed like an issue of the rear rca outputs from the hu, i disconnected the rear rca outs. Now there is whine coming from the fronts, which never happened before. Anyone have any idea what the problem is? Also when there is whine, it seems that the volume output is lower. I checked the ground, and it seems ok, but i guess i can always triple check that.

Try a new ground for your HU

you could use externally grounded rca cables, if all else fails

it would be more work than any of your other options, tho

it almost sounds to me like you don't have enough slack in your speaker wire going through you doorjambs, or your speaker wires are spliced or have broken sheathing somewhere, and they're grounding on the chassis, same could hold true for your rca's, maybe they're pinched somewhere

thx for the responses. the thing that i dont get is why the hum changes so specifically, such as why it goes to the front when the rear rca's are disconnected, or when i swap the front and rear rca's instead of hum, it cuts out instead.

your rcas might be touching a ground? mines was like that the other day then i moved it away and no more noise

dleccord has a good point...check the RCA's behind the HU. make sure the outside (Shield) is not touching the HU or chassis.
