cubic foot requirement question

let me just jump into this one. if a sub specs in at a required volume of .75cu-1.5cu how do you find the "sweet spot?" and, how will sound be effected if the box is built closer to the smaller cubic foot requirement than the larger requirement and vise versa?

hope I'm making myself clear.

 
Yes, there will be a differance, the smaller the box the more it will peak, where as if the box is larger the response will be smoother and LFE will be better.

(I like big boxes personally...)

Peaky response is exactly how it sounds there will be a noticable tone that is louder than all the others...

Smoother response is where all of the frequencies will be more even in volume.

LFE = Low Frequency Extension.

Peak = a "peak" in the frequency response. A certain frequency (or group of frequencies) will be much louder than the frequencies above and below them:

See the gray, purple and red lines? They have "peaks" in the frequency response. They are good for obtaining more "peak" output, but bad for smooth response (optimally smooth [flat] response would be the black line).

LFE = low frequency extension. How much output the subwoofer has as the frequency decreases.

Larger enclosure = lower Qtc, which means flatter frequency response, better "transient" response, better low frequency extension, less overall output and better efficiency.

Smaller enclosure = higher Qtc, which means peaky frequency response, worsened transient response, worsened low frequency extension, more overall output and worse efficiency.

Just need to decide which box better fits your tastes. Smaller box is more for obtaining higher output, larger box is aimed more for sound quality type installs or where power is limited.

ok, I understand. so.....if I'm looking for more sound quality out of the sub I go with a size of box more towards the larger requirement. if I'm looking for sheer loudness would need to go with a smaller box. is this correct??

 
with that sub though if you did a box 1.25 i think you will be more than happy with it all around i had 2 12w6v2's and had them in a 1.25 and they were amazing i wish the box was just alittle larger and I would of loved to see how they would of been. But for the one 10 1.25 I personaly think would be a great area to keep it in, you should get good lows out of it and have it still be very well all around.

ok, next questions, hope you guys don't mind.

the 10w6 has a top mount depth of 6.9" so, if I mount the sub directly onto the front baffle can the rear baffle be.......let say, 7.5" from the rear of the sub? will this effect sound in any way?

oh, incase you guys are wondering. I'm wanting to build a box for a truck.
