What sucks is that I am using vacation time for these appointments when I could be using sick time.

I would say it is the govt, but every place I have worked for keeps them seperate.
Sick time can be rolled over forever, vacation time- you have to exhaust after 240 hours.

The crazy thing about sick time is that some employees here have nearly a year's worth of sick time....and now the govt is considering paying a lump sum, instead of a person calling out sick 2 days per week the last couple years they work there.

How bass ackwards....

All I see these days is one big PTO bucket. The less you're sick, the more vacation you can have. And it is more common to see sick pay not paid out if unused, where vacation pay is like an extra bank of cash you can compile. I walked from my last job with an additional month's pay cashed out. September was a fun month. lol

lol...I wouldn't try to lay concrete...I would try to spead gravel. I actually took off today and tomorrow to try...but reality stepped in the way. Now I think I got diabetes.

Why? Any other reason than what we have already discussed re: symptoms? Any test results, physiciian comments?

BTW, it sounds like hypoglocemia (sp AFU) which I guess is a form of diabeties. Anyway, if that is what it is then it is pretty easy to control.

I took off a couple days to work on the yard, and now I will have to spend them in dr's office.

Tomorrow, I have a gluclose tolerance test...which I guess is that thing you mentioned about drinking some extra sweet soft drink and then they take my blood every could hours.

Yep -- that's what they did with my pops. He has done very well since he found out what was causing his problems. He just watches his diet -- nothing drastic, just mindful of what he eats and he makes certain that he does not go prolonged periods without eating.

The fact that sick time is not paid out makes people use it in a bad way when getting close to retirement. The guy whose job I do now called out twice per week for his last couple years to exhaust all of his sick time....whereas everyone would have been better off if the govt would have just paid him the sick time in a lump sum upon retirement. Currently, the govt is considering a plan that will pay people 50% lump sum upon retirement/quitting....however, there is much debate about it and doubtful that it will take effect. As more and more govt enmployees are closing in on retirement, 3 day workweeks will be common.

They should cap it so people can only accumulate say, 40 hours a year max of sick pay.

I am thinking that is what I have to do. I made the mistake of telling my mom (she asked why my arm was bandaged up. She is diabetic and made this big deal that I cannot eat jumbalaya (which I eat about once a week) anymore because rice has sugar in it. I then asked wtf do them chinks do?


They would have issue. Oftentimes womenfolk need more than 40 hours when they have babies. They have to save up the 8 weeks or whatever because it isn't paid time off.

Isn't maternity leave mandatory under federal law?

FMLA -- 12 weeks leave. But it does not apply in all situations. You have to employed for so long before you are entitled, you have to work at a duty station that has a certian number of employees within so many miles, etc.

Oh, and it does not require that the leave be paid if you are not otherwise entitlled to be paid due to sick time, vacation.
