linkDC, this HTPC thread sounds more promising than the PS3. Reason is: I don't have a laptop to actually burn the DVDs.

it all depends on what options you want with the HTPC, an external DVD burner would be relatively cheap and would hook right up to the Ps3 via the USB portDC, this HTPC thread sounds more promising than the PS3. Reason is: I don't have a laptop to actually burn the DVDs.
Yes, and once you learn to accept that, you are gold. They are all scandalous and devious.
told yaApparently burning blu-ray is hard...the links those guys posted confuse me.
However, I dunno about spending $1,000 on a DVD player....which is what I will be doing if I don't download a bunch of movies. Hell, it may be easier just to get a PS3 and just play movies. I could buy a ton of movies for the price difference.
The SATA 150 or 300 are no different as far as where you can install. They both will fit in a laptop as long as its a 2.5" drive. The 150 and 300 are just transfer rate. Since we are no where near the 150 mark as is, there is no reason to spend the extra for the 300.Is it SATA 1.5GB or SATA 3GB for the laptop hard drive?or does the PS3 have two USB ports so I can just get external both?
it would be best to put the larger drive into the ps3 as opposed to running it externalyThe SATA 150 or 300 are no different as far as where you can install. Not sure on the PS3 USB ports...I havent done anything to mine.
I guess I'm golden then because my eyes have been opened finally. Took long enough I guess. Just took drastic things to realize.Yes, and once you learn to accept that, you are gold.

when you put the new HD in the ps3 it automaticly formats the drive for the Ps3's O/S from there you can partition off a part of the HD in the Ps3 dashboard for another O/S (IE: windows or linux) you could partition off a part of the original 40 or 80 gig HD and setup another O/S, then just plug in another HD via USBBasically any of these:

and

And you said something about transferring the PS3 O/S to the new hard drive, but I forget.
I was hoping you were wrong though. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gifNext time save yourself time and listen to me.
yes... you pretty much turn your Ps3 into a computer, but you can switch it back to a Ps3 with the push of a buttonIs there a reason to partition the HD to support another O/S? I am guessing the PS3 O/S does not have the ability to play the ripped DVDs.
Chebby,I was hoping you were wrong though. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif
linux is free //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gifI see....so i still would have to buy a license for an O/S....but what you are saying makes a lot of sense.
Since I am upgrading the HD anyway and won't be playing any PS2 games, is it worth it to get the 80 GB or just the 40?
