I think I may going to get back into home audio in a small way. I have a two channel receiver to start with -- and that is mainly what I am interested in. I really am not interested in wiring 5 - 8 speakers all over my living room at the moment.

Any home speakers costing less that $1,500 each will sound like Sony Explodes bought second hand at a garage sale, unless:

You DIY, in which case it does not matter how inexpensive the materials are or that you have no experience building speakers.

**** all that noise. I had some sony towers with a sony or jvc receiver. Worked fine for me.

I like 5.1 for movies, but may opt for 2.1. It is one of the things I will ponder during my month away.

Well nothing right now. Its not high up there on my list of to-do's.

Also, surround sound has never been a make or break for me. I personally dont think it adds near as much as the hype would suggest.

on another note, do people sell their kit/homemade speakers on those diy sites? i would imagine they eventually want to upgrade when the speakers that they built as a vessel for god just aren't cutting it.

I don't know, but I wuld be more worried about how some yahoo put together a DIY rather than how bad a cheap set of infinity/jbl sound. Unless of course yoy had some confidence in the seller.
