16 of them gets a bit expensive.
I will have to ponder a bit.

thats why line arrays generally use cheap drivers. Since it isn't a hifi setup, you don't want to waste good money. $36 may seem cheap until you realize how much 16 of them comes to lol. It would be nice though.

I mostly use my HT for video games...so subs aren't really needed
6.5s get kind of cost prohibitive when you need 16.

You need whatever will give you a final load of 8ohm to match the XOs. With the mids your load can be either 4 or 8 because the dayton XOs have a jumper for either load, but only do 80hm loads for tweeters. With the planars I linked to, you can use 1 or 4 for an 8ohm load. 2 would give you either a 2ohm load or a 16ohm load. So basically you need 4 in each lol.

Oh and if usning the 3" TBs then go with 16 in each enclosure. 4 groups of 4. 4*8/4=8ohm.

Except you would need a custom XO for that bigun. its 4 ohm. **** sexay though.

Is there any advantage to 16 of the 3" TB vs. 8 of the 4.5" generics?

I would say the 16 3" have potential to get louder, but it looks as though the 4.5s will extend lower for some midbass.

As far as worth it in cost, that is relative and I know money means a hell of a lot more to you than me LOL. They are definitely more suited for line array by nature. You could always use the same 3/4" daytons I did but just more of them and an attenuator. My tweeters only faults are the lione isn't tall enough to match the mid stage properly. The 3/4" daytons are cheap.
