Since I don't want the line array to be much more than 5.5' tall, then I will need much fewer midranges.
So maybe 10 midranges per side however many ribbons that would be the same length.

Are 4.5" midranges a good choice?

4.5" is good, but using 10 is gonna make it hard to do a proper wiring combo to achieve 4 or 8 0hm load. the tweets dont have to be exactly the same lenght, but You will want them to be a good length to create the proper field as I have discovered.

No. Spacing the tweeters apart flies smack dab in the face of doing a line array in the first place. You get no coupling and introduce a great chance of severe cancellation with sapce in between each tweeter.

I can do three sets of 4 midranges, and two sets of 4 tweeters.

Actually it would be better if using a pre-made dayton XO to do 2 set of 4 midranges, so you get a 8 ohm load. then 2 set of 2 tweeter(the planars I linked to) to get an 8ohm load. This will match up with a dayton XO like this one http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=260-144 neither 10 nor 12 mids will allow for a 4 or 8ohm load and you would have to custom build an XO, to which I have not much experience in and was going to get mine built for me when the time comes.

With a installation OD of ~5"...you get aprox 40"....add 8" on either side and you are about where I want to be height wise.

make the enclosure the 5'5" tall you wanted then start the array fro mthe top going down like I basically did with mine. This should put the maximum amount of drivers with in the listening area instead of having drivers needlessly on the floor. I think 8 would be fine.
