Thats pimp. The schooling programs are awesome. My dad went to school every time he got laid off. Has done just about every job in the plant and even setup a factory in Germany for 2 years on their dime. Getting in is the trick, but you have quite a few avenues once your in. Good luck.

My uncle works at the Tech Center and he referred me. They drew names at random and his name was drawn 2nd. This is not factory work. It's white collar office work, but I will be union if hired. My uncle had a chance to go to Australia for a training program but he is deathly afraid of flying so he passed it up.

It's fine when laid off too. More time to finish free schooling to further advance in the company.

The big 3 is closing plants left and right in Michigan and outsourcing jobs. Hell GM offered to buy out all their employees. Big 3 factory work is almost non existent anymore. If it was in the factory I wouldn't even bother because working on a line has nothing to do with my career goals and it's much harder to advance from the line. The Tech center however, promotes advancement and will advance people in getting degrees. If I don't get this job, I may apply for their internship down in the corporate offices.

Tech Center employees don't get laid off very often. It's the factory workers who get the layoffs. Besides GM is hiring now at 14-16 an hour and have cut benifits for new hires. They still offer good insurance and benefits, but not as good as the employees who were hired in from the previous contracts.

He'll get unemployment checks. Plus he is young. What is the difference if he works a menial job paying for school or not paying for school and getting menial unemployment chacks? You are looking at this opportunity through your eyes.
