No, wood is fine. The concrete board is used so that the thinset can have something to bond to. As concrete will not bond to wood. However i typically put thinset under the board when i'm applying it over wood to fill in any low spots etc. so there will be less noise and a much lower chance of the tile cracking due to the board moving.It's not rotten. It goes under the tub.
I can't get a good pic. It is a soft spot about 3" in diameter where the back of the shower meets the floor.
