Toowoomba is not a state //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

It is a city (town?) in the state of Queensland //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif

But that answered my question anyway...

Basically, because we didn't manage to get everything in order properly before we got married we had to start over from scratch. It's a long, involved, drawn-out process that is a major PITA.

We originally were applying for a fiance visa as we thought we could get it all sorted before we got married. We didn't manage to do that but had already set a hard date for the wedding (booked a priest, both wedding and reception venues, caterer, etc).

So - since we are now married the fiance visa doesn't apply and we had to start over and apply for a spousal visa. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif
So, what can you do with just a passport... can't you go on longterm vacation... or how long can you stay overthere with just a passport?

Thank goodness a passport is good for 10 years at a time. They're freggin' expensive!

With a passport and a tourist visa (available to anyone who's not a felon) you may visit for up to 90 days. A tourist visa is renewable up to a maximum of 3 times for a total of 1 year's stay. After that 3rd renewal period expires you must leave the country or else face deportation by force. *Just an //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif Australia is considerably more strict about such things than say, oh, the US??? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/mad.gif.c18f003ab0ef8a0d9c27ca78d77a6392.gif*

Once that 1 year period is up you have to leave the country and start all over. I cannot afford to stay in Oz for a year without working and I won't ask my wife to support me for that length of time (though she could easily afford it)

It's a personal decision. One that doesn't make much sense to most people but my wife respects me all the more for it, thankfully, so we do what we do. Eventually it will all get sorted. If I haven't managed to get over there by Christmas time she's coming over here for a vacation (she's never been to the states) and to meet her in-laws which she hasn't done up to this point.

As the value of the US dollar isn't static, Jason, it varies from day to day.

When I first went to Australia in 2001 one US dollar would buy 2 Australian dollars. Our dollar isn't NEARLY that strong currently...

According to XE.com's realtime currency converter -

1,125,000.00 AUD = 947,486.37 USD
