What'd you set the gains with?

I've never even heard any stress from any of my tweeters I've used... usually I take them a few dB's down on the HU b/c they get plenty loud to not have to use full power.

gain set with dmm. etc.

they are set at -2 db down. and they still will rock you.

i really dont understand why they flamed up.

Indeed. Mine are 70rms I believe... i set them to 50rms with a DMM and have them @-2db as well... give myself some headroom.

You gonna replace them with the same?

Huh, I dunno, unless

a) your gain on the up got raised from vibrations or something

b) you clipped the pre-outs on the deck

c) your tweet had a manufacturer defect.

If you didn't have JL amps it could be possible that there was stuff that happened at the minimum impedence of the tweeter so that the amp over powered it...but the JL would maintain that same power level so imp. dipping would not be an issue here.
