My credit took a nosedive about 5 years ago when I got divorced. 2 repossed vehicles, a ton of credit cards, etc. I had judgements and everything. Never did a **** thing about it, either. Credit companies harassed me so much, I said F' em, and changed my number. Then about 3 months ago, out of curiousity, I went on freecreditreport.com, paid the monies, and saw all my credit reports. It wasnt pretty, I promise you.
I went straight down the line and disputed everything, top to bottom. On the reason, there was a check box for "ex-spouse's debt". Checked them all. Within 48 hours every one of them was removed!! I applied online for a credit card and got it same day. Made one payment on the card, and I got an email from FCR.com, telling me a change was made to my report. I clicked on the link, and it showed my score at 740. Totally blew me away. Couple more months and I'll get a new car, I think. True story.
