Cracked Cone...Fixable?

I picked up a pair of Eclipse Alum's 8122dvc's locally. The guy I got them from obviously beat the crap outta this one. The cone cracked all the way through. Other than the cone the rest of the sub is in good shape.

Is there an easy fix, or is a complete recone the only way to go? I think a **** dust-cap over the crack would be the *** //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

I asumme the motor on this thing is a TC-9, but I have read different things. Anyone know for sure? Single 1.5" slug approx 7.5" in diameter.

lol, it's got a backplate tattoo on it!

It was common with these to see this when someone puts a shit ton of power on them.

It was a bad design to start with, you can thank tee cee sounds for that. Id just use some IC-2000 to fill the gap there and put a new dustcap on it like you suggested.

I knew a guy that had four of those on a kicker 2500.

He was beating it pretty hard and i started to smell coil. I told him this, and he said nah they are just heating up, they cant blow because they are aluminum. He then proceeded to turn his gain up. It was funny when one locked up.

Yeah, I'm not sure why people insist on over-powering drivers that are meant for SQ.

You can thank the person who didn't know how to use it within it's limitations.

That is a TC-9 variant. It has a long extended T-yoke for a specific flux geometry.

Yeah I figured the guy just beat the hell outta them and bottomed them out mercilessly.

I was told that it still sounds fine except at certain frequencys. I just got a good deal and wanted them for the motors mainly.

Ill glue them to death and see how it sounds.

I wonder if the spider is in good repair because the coil should not be able to touch the backplate at the spider's limits.

You want a replacement for this?

yeah i havent had a chance to power it up yet, but by visual inspection the spiders "look" to be in good shape, and decently stiff.

The guy I got them from apparently like to give them hell. Kids...what can I tell you ha

alot of tc subs are able to reach limits without breaking the spiders. If you want proof of that look at my youtube page //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

Yep, seen 'em. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Is it the inertia deforming the cone though, causing the tatoo? Or the half rolls pulling tight and the motor still having the balls to send the coil into the cone deforming it?

I've got over a dozen TC drivers and not one of them can have the coil touch the backplate without the spider bottoming on the frame or motor, or the surround pulling tight enough that it sounds like you should stop turning it up.

I've never killed one so I honestly don't know.

anyone know about box sizes for one of these 12's? I've heard ~1.25 cubes sealed, but what about ported? I'm thinking 1.5-2.0 cubes tuned low ~28hz, any ideas?

It's a disorder. I baby everything so it will last forever. My buddy is always telling me to stop being a pusscake. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

I hope you can get a satisfactory result with your repair efforts because these really do sound great.

Yeah I am only planning on using 1 of the pair anyways. So the busted one was kind of a bonus. Thankfully the other one is in pretty decent shape. I will build a box for it tomorrow, hopefully it will sound great.

Ill mess around with the cracked one, and if all else fails I may just recone it. I wonder if this could be turned into a beefy 8?//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/yumyum.gif.0556df42231b304b9c995aefd13928a8.gif I might run into some spider issues though.
