The end result of the doors was crap. They're gone now. It looked good for a day or two until the body filler pulled away from the plastic panel. The new doors are pods that are built into/on/around the existing door panel. I'll get some pics of the new pods up eventually. Currently painted but plan on wrapping in vinyl once I find the right stuff for the job.

Stain can look very nice on MDF and you can use stainable wood filler on the end grain to keep it from absorbing 5000 coats. And yes, stainable wood filler looks just fine and if you use a shitty brush, it adds streaks to the stain that almost looks like woodgrain. I think it makes the MDF look pretty decent.

I also did an enclosure with bedliner and it was decent. It looks painted but the texture is rubbery and stronger than paint. This was done with shitty spray on bedliner and about 3 coats:
