Correct way to measure L-Port

AM I doing this wrong, I measure the opening of the port until the point of were it makes a L and then measure the lenth of that port. Am I supposed to measure it straigth to the back of the box for both pieces? Basically the two pieces that make the L should equal the port lenth?
