-Officer gets a report of a break in, goes to check it out.

-Cop knocks on the door, Gates answers.

-When the officer asks about the situation, Gates explains he was locked out and was trying to get in.

-Officer checks Gates' ID, confirms that he lives there.

-Officer wishes Gates a good afternoon, goes about his business.

Unfortunately, the situation went horribly awry at step two. And whose fault was that?
