The black Mount Vernon cop shot to death Friday by Westchester County police officers was trying to break up a fight shortly before he was killed, officials said Saturday.

Officer Christopher Ridley was driving in downtown White Plains when he witnessed an assault taking place and rushed in to try to make an arrest, White Plains police commissioner Frank Straub said.

Westchester cops then came upon the commotion between the armed Ridley and a 39-year-old man, leading to a confrontation that witnesses said ended with police fatally wounding the off-duty officer when he didn't drop his gun.

"Chris was not pointing the gun at the cops," said the Rev. Al Sharpton, who met with Ridley's family and Westchester officials yesterday. "It's not clear at all why they came in and started firing."

Sharpton said Straub called Ridley a "hero" during a meeting with the officer's family. "The commissioner said to us that Chris did nothing wrong," Sharpton said.

White Plains police declined to reveal much information about the shooting, including the identities or ethnic background of the cops who shot the 23-year-old officer.

Sharpton said the family was told that nine bullets were fired at Ridley. "How do you explain him getting shot while doing the right thing?" he asked.

Ridley, who had no children, joined the Mount Vernon police in 2006. He was a member of that city's influential Grace Baptist Church, where Sharpton will join Ridley's parents for a noon service today.

"They're very distraught," he said of the family, who stood with him at a press conference outside White Plains police headquarters. "They're absolutely outraged."

This is fucking stupid. So they shot some guy because he had a gun and wouldn't drop it. As a cop, he knew the procedures. All he had to do was drop the gun and identify himself. They did what any other cop would do if some unidentified guy was waving a gun around. you never know what kind of gestures he made in the excitement. And Sharpton calling him a hero just because he's black and got shot. Bullshit.

Honestly, this isn't Rodney King. This is two cops following protocol and one getting killed because he didn't. He was unarmed or had followed the rules, and they still shot him, we'd have something to talk about. But that's not the case. Are cops supposed to hold their fire on every black guy now because he might be a cop?//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif

you did not read the article very closely. Straub (the commissioner) is the one who called ridley(the shot cop) a hero.

White Plains police commissioner Frank Straub said.
Straub called Ridley a "hero" during a meeting with the officer's family.

Detective Christopher Ridley was shot and killed after being mistaken for a suspect in White Plains, New York.

Detective Ridley was off duty when he observed a fight between two homeless men near the intersection of Court Street and Martine Avenue at approximately 5:00 pm. He exited his vehicle and attempted to break up the fight, but was then violently attacked by the aggressor. During the struggle, Detective Ridley's handgun fell to the ground and discharged, attracting the attention of two Westchester County police officers who were in an adjacent county building.

The two officers approached the scene as Detective Ridley picked up his weapon from the ground. Not realizing that Detective Ridley was a police officer, the two officers ordered him to drop his weapon and then fired when he did not comply, fatally wounding him.

I didn't read the article at all. Just your post.

This is what you posted:

Sharpton said Straub called Ridley a "hero" during a meeting with the officer's family.
So I skipped over a couple of words while skimming the post. My bad:rolleyes:

The way Al Sharpton gets involved when anything like this happens, you can understand why I wouldn't double-check when I thought Sharpton was callng him a hero. How can anyone take claims like this seriously with that greasy-haired joke popping up?
