You get the upgrades by getting more money to spend...

I found that in the beginning, clearing a path to the surface, or going right on the edges where you could make a single-ship's width path to the top, was helpful...at least until you get the fuel and drill to go deeper and longer without coming back up.

An easy way to make money is play for a good while,get down pretty deep 700+then save your game and start over with the loaded data and you`ll be back at the very beginning but you`ll still have all upgrades that you`ve purchased.i played that damm game for like 6 hours last night hahaha but i was taking out every single rock that was in my way..
