confused

I thought I knew what was going on here, but a co-worker now has me confused (I think intentionally).

I'm setting up a dual 4 ohm voice coil sub wired in parallel for 2 ohm operation. The sub is rated at 900w RMS @ 2 ohms (450w per coil). Do I need an amp rated for 900w or 450w @ 2 ohm? I thought it was 900w, but this guy is telling me it should be rated for 450w @ 2 ohm. Whats the right answer?

the sub is rated 900 wrms. whats to be confused about?
Let me start by saying there's no need to be snide.

He was claiming that since each VC can only handle 450w and they are fed from the same channel that the channel should be rated for 450w. In his theory they are both receiving the full 450w instead of sharing it. Which made no sense at all. But it's been a decade since I've built a system, so I just wanted to make sure.
