i watch the show regularly, and he says many domain names, mostly made up funny ones, since saying a real one would be advortiseing... i dont see how this time him saying that one would make them have to buy it and not all the others he says
Because by mentioning it, and by representing NBC Studios, he is endorsing the site on behalf of NBC Studios.
Now if NBC Studios doesn't actaully OWN this site, anyone could put potentially malicious or damaging content on the site and NBC viewers could potentially take legal action against NBC if all their paperwork isn't zipped up tight. It's why you see the disclaimers "the ideas expressed on this show do not necessarily reflect the views of this station, its staff, etc..."
But by buying the site, NBC now has total control over the content and doesn't need to worry about some questionable content creating problems for them. As for other URLs, big ones like Yahoo or BBC are reputable outfits that aren't likely to create problems. But usually they are very careful even with reputable sites.
