u cannot use a dvi to hdmi and get audio with most laptops

dvi doesnt have the pinouts usually dvi is "digital video interface" not high definition "multimedia" interface dvi is the video only part of hdmi

Ive got optical on mine as well. Optical can be used with an SPDIF output which are very common.

Get a PCI audio card. I think creative makes one. Can get digital audio out of that. Not sure on pricing. Try tigerdirect or newegg.
