my computer wont boot up all the way; it stops at a black screen saying "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM"

ive searched google but it seems like the only way to fix it is if i have the os installation cd. has anyone dealt with this before and fixed it without the cd?

That is your config sys file. It can become corrupt due to many things:

Newly installed hardware or software

Windows update

In need of a defrag, badly

A host of other issues.

The best way I know to fix it is to boot from the Windows CD, and when you get to the screen asking whether to install or repair, choose repair. (Usually R). When you get to the C:\ (c prompt), type fix mbr. This will rewrite the Master Boot Record, and will hopefully fix your problem.

If that doesn't fix the issue, try fix boot. This rewrites the Boot.ini file.

Let me know!

i just built this computer 3 months ago and i already need to reinstall?
lmfao!!!! dude welcome to the world of Winblowz! Had an install done got all the drivers on it and all the software i wanted and i restart the compuiter then BAM file is missing or corrupt please try to repair and the repair doesnt work so you have to reinstall all over again! w00t! You should try working in an enviroment with 1000 XP computers. There is always one not working no matter what you do.

Here is what you do. Get a windows xp disk if that is what it is make sure it is home or pro whichever version you are running. Go into your bios "should say hit delete or f10 to enter setup"

Go to boot sequence change the first one from hard drive to cdrom drive. Make sure you have the disk in the drive and restart it will ask you hit any key to boot from cd hit a key. After it does its whole loading up thing select repair from the menu. It should take you to a prompt. Here is what you do type FIXBOOT hit enter hit yes if prompted to rebuild. Next type FIXMBR hit enter same thing say yes if prompted. After that type chkdsk hit enter let it do its thing. after that type exit hit enter. take the cd out and there ya go you are back on track. I have worked on many computers and that is one of the main problems I come into contact with. If you need more help pm me. ^^^^^ HAHA I just saw that link up there.^^^^^

i dont have any disk. and if i reformat ill lose important files
Try the fixing the master boot record thing and when that doesn't work, Go buy another hard drive, and load Windows to that. Piggyback the shitty drive to the other one and drag/drop your files to the other one. After you are done, format the other drive and now you have two drives to store your Pr0ns on.
