Computer People!

Vista rocks on a comp spec'ed to run it.

If you're planning on taking it to class why not look at the XPS m1330.

Tiny laptops fukking rawk. I take my XPS m1210 with my everywhere because its light and has great battery life with a 9 cell.

PS: i run vista and love it.
I was going to suggest the same thing. If you are carrying it around a lot dont get anything larger than a 14" screen. You can always buy an external monitor to hook it up to in your dorm or wherever

Get Vista, it works fine and is only going to get better and become the norm. Not sure if you noticed, but last time I was on Dells website they had a reminder they were stopping production on XP based laptops around the 18th of this month

Buying more ram from the manufacturer depends on the laptop, some are easy to install more ram and some require you to take off the keyboard and can be kinda tricky

Get the cheapest cpu for now. all those cpus are socket p and can be upgraded later just like the ram

just ordered one....

xps m1530

(2.4GHz/800Mhz FSB, 3MB Cache)

vista ultimate

4gb sdram

320gb hd 7200rpm

256mb video card

Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini-card

micro word, excel, and powerpoint

and a full copy scan printer

3yr mcaffee and 3yr service/ accidental service etc etc

$2126

Too much $ and too heavy.

You will regret not taking our advice and getting a smaller machine.

You should have also gotten the complete care if you plan on brining it with you.

imo i would build a computer from scratch off of a website like newegg. if you know what you are doing you can build a computer from scratch that is twice as good as a brand name for the same cost. Xp is good but will lose support soon and will deactivate in 2014 or so the IT professor here and NW would have me believe. Vista is good also if you have enough ram and you get used to it.
Kind of hard to build your own laptop ... Not enough generic parts and the ones you can buy are outrageously expensive last I checked ...

mcaffee is garbage, uninstall that and put free avg on. works better and takes less resources

Wireless N is the lastest innovation in wireless connectivity. Back a few years ago all we had was wireless A and B, they introduced G 2-3 years ago I think and now it is being replaced by N. N is supposed to be alot faster, larger bandwidth, I would make sure its backward compatable, but I'm pretty sure it is.
G has been around for 5 years ...

He could have gotten a sweet *** 12" or 13" in XPS from the dell outlet for like $1000-$1200.

I'm sure he will regret his purchase after lugging that heavy beast around campus for a few days.

Plus he overpaid.

It's a good machine, and even if he did overpay, he'll be happy with it (except maybe for the weight).

I got a 14" and I'm glad I did...it's pretty light compared to my g/f's 15.4".
