competition format? give your opinions

here is how our worked....

Rules of the competition:

• Wattage does not affect division placement.

• All dB Run scores will be read at the dash on the passenger side, sealed, legal using a Term-LAB sensor.

• Competitors have a total of 30 seconds in which to achieve the highest SPL reading.

• Competitors are permitted to use their own material during a dB Run (i.e. music, test tones, etc…) If the competitor does not have their own material, we shall have some on hand.

• Competitors retain the option of having the engine running during a dB Run. If running, the engine may not exceed 5000 RPM (for safety of spectators and judges).

• Operation of the vehicle or sound system must not endanger the judge, competitor, spectators, or any real or personal property on the premises.

• The vehicle's parking brake must be set and the hood must be closed shut.

• Doors, windows, and other panels of the competing vehicle may be held from the outside by a total of four people. Sitting on the trunk / roof is permitted.

• The battery under the hood must have an in-line fuse on the run of power wire that enters into the cab of the vehicle.

• The Secondary battery must have an in-line fuse if the amps are more then 10' (feet) away from it.

• No one besides the competitor is permitted inside the vehicle cabin during a dB Run.

• Power wire runs from the engine bay into the cab of the vehicle must not be exposed outside the vehicle. (Example would be running the wire between the door jam from the hood causing it to be smashed when the door is closed).

• Prior to your run, the vehicle will be inspected for its installation quality and safety. If it appears to be unsafe, you will NOT be able to compete and your entrance fee will be refunded.

• Competitors may remain inside of the vehicle if ONE of these conditions are met (This means if you don't meet the first 2, but sign the WAIVER at the time of registering then you may sit in the vehicle without ear plugs, this is to alleviate MCA of any liability due to hearing loss from loud music or pressure levels)..

1. They wear adequate hearing protection at all times. Removal of the hearing protection while inside of the vehicle will result in immediate disqualification

2. The competitor's maximum SPL never exceeds 140 dB. A measured SPL in excess of 140 dB will be recorded as 140 dB.

3. The competitor has signed the entry form part that includes a waiver stating that the competitor understands that "exposure to high sound pressure levels may result in temporary or permanent hearing loss".

• All competitors must conduct themselves in a professional and courteous manner. Physical or verbal abuse of other competitors, the officiating crew, exhibitors, or spectators may result in immediate disqualification, ejection from the competition.

Division Break down:

~ The division break down is done by cone area of your subwoofer. Take the diameter of the subwoofer and half it that gives you radius, then (radius) x (radius) x (3.14) x (the number of subwoofers you have) = the total cone area.

Class A - 1-101 sq. inches

Class B - 102 - 160 sq. inches

Class C - 161 - 260 sq. inches

Class D - 261 - 354 sq. inches

Class E - 355 + sq. inches

Round Subwoofer Breakdown

6.5” = 33.18 sq. inches

8” = 50.26 sq. inches

10” = 78.54 sq. inches

12” = 113.09 sq. inches

13” = 132.73 sq. inches

15” = 176.71 sq. inches

18” = 254.46 sq. inches

21” = 346.36 sq. inches

Square Subwoofer Breakdown

10” = 100 sq. inches

12” = 144 sq. inches

15” = 225 sq. inches

18” = 324 sq. inches

I like the idea of a points system, but I dont know if it would work. seems extremely complex.

and with the points system, would suvs/trunk cars/ hatbacks still be seperated? would certain cars have a higher point value? (ie: crx)

it worked out well for the most part... except single 15 and single 18 are in the same class.....

and class e ets tuff 2 18's are challenging 10 18's unlimited you know but it works out....

Honestly, this is exactly why I always prefer hanging out at the show 'n tell portion of these events more than dealing with the 'who scored what points' routine and listening to people argue about which bracket they belong in.

I agree, I mean you have guys building custom fuse blocks so they can use the cheap *** audiopipe fuses that are rated at 5amps and blow at 20, everyone knows this and does it, but that is how the classes are rated, by fuse size. there has to be a easier more consistant way that takes into account the real world implications of the rules. Basically to include the daily drivers on a larger scale while not excluding the big boys
I dont know if you've looked, but the 2009 MECA rules are out. And you cant do the multi fuse setups anymore (like 20 5 amp fuses, except for X1 class).

AS1 - 0 - 550 - 1 fuse

AS2 - 551 - 1000 - 2 fuses

AS3 - 1001 - 2000 - 3 fuses

S1 - 0 - 550 - 1 fuse

S2 - 551 - 1000 - 2 fuses

S3 - 1001 - 2000 - 3 fuses

S4 - 2001 - 4000 - 4 fuses

S5 - Unlimited

M1 - 0-550 - 1 fuse

M2 - 551 - 1000 - 2 fuses

M3 - 1001 - 2000 - 3 fuses

M4 - 2001 - 4000 - 4 fuses

M5 - Unlimited

MX1 - 0 - 2000 - 3 fuses

MX2 - 2001 - 4000 - 4 fuses

MX3 - Unlimited

X1 - 0 - 4000 - Any number of fuses

X2 - Unlimited

DB1 - 0 - 550 - 1 fuse

DB2 - 551 - 1000 - 2 fuses

DB3 - 1001 - 2000 - 3 fuses

DB4 - 2001 - 4000 - 4 fuses

DB5 - Unlimited

I've only competed in two styles, Usaci and Iasca. I prefer Usaci, Except or the oulaw mic placement.

In the cone area style I always lose. My 2 12's and 850 watts have no chance against the 5k watts 2 12" systems.

I think amp size is the most fair in the ones I have been in.
