from what i understand clipping can be caused by either overdriving the input on an amp(have a hu that is 4 volt & set the gains at .5 volts) or running an amp hard while the voltage drops low(9-11 volts). either one can cause damage to speakers or amps. there are others on here that can explain better than i. hope this helps.
yes, bass boost is a no-no. The bass engine on the head unit will not clip it if you have your gains set correctly on your amp. Just keep your amp level, or gain at a safe level.

Head unit clipping has nothing to do with amp settings. You can clip the headunit's output by cranking the volume / gain / EQ. You can also clip the signal by raising the gain or bass boost on the amp.
Either way you shouldn't need to use any bass boost on a correctly setup system.
