Clipping~ what exactly is it

Low voltage ? or how do you send a bad signal? i have a 3kd at .5 ohm, with volts dropping no lower than 12.6 at full tilt and i put a thread at ssa and asked on the BTL page if i was burning excess glue off or what it was. and he said i was "clipping the heck" out of it. so now i am curious since my volt dropps arent that low.

when your sine wave get the top and bottom squared off it is clipping.

So instead of your sub traveling linearly back and forth it stops at each peak for a fraction of a second and the coil heats up becasue it is not moving, if your coil can hadle it thermally nothing will happen.

Your gain is not a volume, it is there to match the input voltage, once your amp cant make any more clean power it, it starts clipping, which you can sometimes hear due to the non linear travel of the sub. Bet way to check for clipping is to use an O-scope and look at the waveform.

my gain is a hair under half. but its still clipping?
The orientation of the gain knob says nothing about it being set properly. Follow the guidelines posted on this forum for gain setting. /story

I grit my teeth every time someone says "I only have my gain halfway" or anything of that sort. That doesn't mean you matched your gain with the input.
