Clipping Questoin

ok dont flame me for not doin a search just please read my question...

i got a pair of subs & an amp off my boy for pretty cheap $400. two audiobahn alum12q's, and a pg octane 15.0:1. now my question is about the amp mostly but it has to do with the subs.

the pg is rated 750 watts rms x 1 @ 2 ohms. it is a mono amp, but the amp has 2 positives and 2 negatives. i dont have that much experience with mono amps, so if i wire the alum's up to 3 ohms (each sub getting one + and one -) would each +- give me 750 watts @ 2 ohms? i kno im getting less when i wire it to 3 ohms but im curious bout how much power will be put out totally.

so to the clipping. if each +- doesn't put out 750 watts @ 2 ohms, then it would probably be like 375 @ 2ohms to each sub right? (again itd be less cuz itd be 3 ohms) if that was the case would i be able to clip the amp to get the most out of the subs? i kno they are rated 1000 watts a piece, but from what ive been told they would be better off only gettin around 700-800 cuz they are overrated. i dont kno just what i heard.

so i guess to sum things up (yea i coulda saved some time by just makin it quick), if the amp doesn't put out 750 watts @ 2ohms for each +- for the speaker channel, would i be able to clip the amp to get the most out of my subs?

i appreciate any help

well if your wiring the final load to 3 ohms, then its probobally safe to assume your amp is putting out about 600 wRMS into a single channel. It appears to have two channels just to make connecting the subs easier, but both positives are shared by a single terminal. So in actuality you are giving your subs 300 watts each... which won't push them to their full potential but will definitely give them a workout.

and by the way, never clip your amp. Why would you want to do that unless your competing?? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eyebrow.gif.fe2c18d8720fe8c7eaed347b21ea05a5.gif

You could use either set of outputs, or one from each...it doesn't matter.

As for the second question, you never want to use a clipped signal to "make up" for lack of power - not only does solid-state distortion sound like ***, but the square waveform is dangerous to your speakers...

youll hear people here at CA.com tell you NOT to EVER clip an amp, but i clipped the shit outta an MTX 250x with 2 jensen subs hooked up, and nothing died on me. give it a try, theyre only audiobahns...

hmm i dunno, but i can see what theyr saying and thanks for the info guys i appreciate it. real quick response too.

oh btw, im not gettin into comps anytime soon. i just got a friend who thinks his system is from the gods. he got 2 natural sound 12's, theyre just "eh". i just need to show him that there is better shyt out there than what he has.

u might not like me then. im very liberal when it comes to the volume control and i like things LOUD. prob like mostly everyone, but i dunno sometimes i think i come close to abusing my stuff cuz im tryin to squeeze out as much power as possible u kno?

just one more question while i got ur guys attention. its possible that i could wire the subs up to 1.5 ohms.... only the amp is 2 ohm stable not 1 ohm stable, so would it be better if i just did that? or should i be more careful and just keep it at 3 ohms for each sub?

you would probobally be okay running it at 1.5 for a while, but remember that voice coils ratings are almost never perfect, so it could be like 1.2 or lower, which would damage your amp.

You best bet is to wire it to 3 ohms

Two words...impedance rise.
im sorry im kinda slow sometimes. correct me if im wrong but wouldnt that mean the resistance would increase? and if thats right it would be ok to run it at that ohmage or w/e u wanna call it? but i feel wrong for some reason.

ohmage = impedence

lol i think

okay? it'd still be better to wire to 3 ohms rather than risk 1.5 or lower.
but if he got a DMM and measured the current at like 1.8 ohms or something I think it would be okay running at that resistance
ok cool, sounds like a plan.

thanks guys i really appreciate how quik u guys are to help. u guys are great //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/thumbsup.gif.3287b36ca96645a13a43aff531f37f02.gif.
