Cleaning/protecting from rust?

I say paint with some rustoleum after you clean up the gap with sand paper and tape

i agree but make **** sure you use the high temp pant and make **** sure you dry it very good. put some paint thinner to dry it out really good and once that dries wipe it don't and paint it..

I don't know if high temp is really necessary, but I've used black grill paint before on exhaust tips with good results.
