Chevy Small Blocks

You think a 383 sb would be fine if you used 305 parts on it? Upgraded exhaust of course.
Define '305 parts'. Some components are interchangeable between different sized small blocks, and some definitely are not.

For a solid 383 Id probably want a block with 4-bolt mains or a steel crank (or both), upgraded connecting rods, new pistons to match the new bore (unless you are working with a block with very little wear), and I wouldn't mind having a decent set of vortec heads. Also the more common/obvious choices, a double roller timing chain (or gear-drive), high volume oil pump, new bolt kit, and a high quality gasket kit (dont cheap out here).

we talking camshafts, pistons, ect
The cam is more tricky. That will depend on the fuel delivery system you use, heads, performance/driving needs, etc. Id consult a cam manufacturer and let them guide you through chosing the right cam for your application/needs. You can build the sweetest engine in the world, but if you screw up the cam specs, it will still perform like a dog.

Ive got my buddy whos gonna help me, he knows how to build a car up from the ground

i would just buy a used ls motor and tranny. drop it in as is, or upgrade the parts for durability and ur good to go

when i had my lt1 camaro i looked at local junkyards there were so many motors with the computer and tranny for pretty cheap. but the lt1 was still going strong so didnt mess with it but that was my plan

There is NOTHING in any 305 chevy engine worth using for any

sort of engine build up.... What will work and what you want to use are

2 totally different scenarios....

I have been building chevy engines myself for over 20 years and I race them as well......... for a 383

you need a clean 350 block and an aftermarket assembly (crank rods and pistons)

Skys the limit as to how much you want to spend - for every day driving you can knock one out

pretty cheap........or you can buy one turn key from many local and mail order engine builders

Edelbrock makes a nice 383......carb to pan

only thing ur gunna use from the 305 is the block (unless u got one from a 350) from their on a 383 build involves turning the crank boring that ***** out .30 over and the rest is aftermarket parts homie. for just under 4k u can simply buy a 383. prob pretty close in price unless u do the work urself

u cant use a 305 block for any 383......305 blocks are not worth 5 bucks
