You should still contact the provider first.
the phone should still work no matter if the SP has the ESN or not, I use to work for Cingular and its a preferred method but not a must.

To the OP, does the phone display the name of your service provider on the home screen or no

No, but it seems to have all bars up.

 
online it says your phone is locked if it your phone is requesting a PUK code, but mine isn't. I also read something about the network profile or web session. I'm not sure and am looking for the link

 
Give your service provider the esn of the new phone so they can activate on your account.

Shouldnt need to, thats the nice thing about having a sim card.

Also it may no be showing a service provider for many reasons other than its not unlocked. Visit Howardforums dot com
