CD player won't read CD's for 5-15 minutes, after that time it works fine

I just installed a new cd player into his 1996 ford taurus, and it works fine except when you put a CD into it when you first start up the car. It will just continuously try to read CD's and not do anything. After 5-15 minutes however it will read all the cd's he has fine. Does anyone have any idea of what could be wrong with this thing?
