CD Player / Deck Power Requirements

I am building an arcade cabinet, so, this is not for a car...

I ordered an amp off eBay been almost 2 months so assuming lost in the mail. Was debating another amp, then thought about a car stereo/deck that I have gathering dust and wondered how that would work.

Deck says 52Wx4, which I'm sure the RMS is lower, but I do have a pair of Sony 8Ohm 35W RMS speakers I salvaged for the arcade build so, should be enough power... I mean let's face it, it's an arcade cab and the speakers will be 2 feet from my face so I don't need 500W or anything crazy.

Problem is, searching online, power requirements seem to range from 12V2A DC to needing a 12V20A DC power supply. Some people said a 12V2A DC adapter, some say a larger switching power supply... and I have seen a few videos using a computer PSU.

I don't plan to add an amp... I posted in an arcade forum and most responses misread the OP and keep talking about 1000w amps... not the case here, hoping just 2 speakers, the CD player and power.

The arcade cabinet will have a 550W PSU, after I add the computer, hard drive, two fans and LED lights for the front sign, the PSU calculator says it'll be around 240w, recommended PSU is 290w, leaving me with about 260w so, decent amount of headroom there.

Figured, if anyone would know about this stuff, it would be the people on a car audio forum. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Because of budget, I'm hoping to use what I have... would the 550w PSU I have power the car stereo? would it output enough power to get a good loud volume? not neighbors complaining loud but, computer speaker loud where max'd out is too much, probably leave around half way.

Welcome to the forum! And a computer psu will work fine as long as it supplies 12 volts at the fused amperage indicated on the decks fuse. The method of deriving amperage from dc wattage is a=w/v so, 260 watts divided by 12 volts which comes out at around 21 amps. That being said, you should be able to run a deck off that amount of amperage just fine. Most decks that say 50 watts of power its actually around 13 to 15 watts rms, which should suit your needs just fine

Well, question is... because I have seen a lot of YouTube vids running a deck off a psu... will it work with all the other computer stuff hooked up?

All the DIY and YouTube vids show a deck with a psu, but always just those two things and nothing else. I'm usually fine with just try and see if it works, but computer guts I just got a few weeks ago and would hate to fry them trying.

They always say to learn from your mistakes, but, I'd rather learn from some else's experience... it's cheaper that way. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Understandable. I cant envision any reason why it would cause issues with the computer parts as they all just consume 12 volts. But you could add a power isolator to make sure that the deck doesnt back feed anything into the psu if it shorts out or something. https://www.amazon.com/Tekonsha-7000-Terminal-Battery-Isolator/dp/B0002UHVYQ

Hmm, at that point, probably be safer and as cheap to buy another PSU.

It's too bad, I went though my old PC parts bin and tossed a bunch of old modems and routers and such, and a few were 12V but low amps, like 500mAh-3.5A I think was the highest. Then a few up around 5A but they were also only 5V.

Also found an extra 19v laptop PSU so hopefully that amp I bought off eBay shows... it's my first choice, but failing that I'm just weighing options because already wasted 2 months on that thing. Figured a car deck, has an EQ, bass, treble, volume knob... and my car has a basic Sony 52x4 and its way more than loud enough.

I played with the idea of stepping the 19v down to 12v and using the laptop psu, but, sounds simple, becomes a big hassle and need or spend about $20 to make that work so, back to buying a psu online again. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

PSU wise, if I did grab one for the deck... what amperage would I be looking at? again, searching online I seem to find answers ranging from 5A to 20A.

Side note... Army of Darkness is my all time fav movie.

yeah, if you have some old dead computers, you can salvage a psu from one of the atx cases and itd work just as well. The deck will power up on as little as 5 amps, but once stuff starts working like the mosfets etc etc, itll likely need the full amperage of the fuse that it comes with. Looking at the owners manual of just an average lower end cd player, it says that the maximum amperage draw is 10 amps. Check the 3rd listing from the top left here https://www.manualslib.com/manual/393716/Pioneer-Deh-1200mp.html?page=17#manual

that should be pretty universal for most basic decks with low voltage output and a small basic display. Mine puts out 4 volts and has a big touchscreen for video playback, so itll consume twice that, im sure

and army of darkness is the bomb!!!

I think the specs for mine are

Amplifier Section

Speaker Impedance: 4-8 Ohms

Max power output: 52 watts x 4 at 4 ohms

Power

Power Consumption (in Operation): 45W

Output Power: 52W x4 High Power - 17 watts per channel minimum continuous average power into 4 Ohms, 4 channels driven from 20 Hz to 20 kHz with no more than 5% total harmonic distortion.

Current Drain: 3 - 5 amps

Input Power: 12 V DC car battery (negative ground (earth))

Input Voltage: 12 V DC car battery (negative ground)

So, might be able to use a 12v5A power adapter. I won't have all 4 speakers hooked up, a sub, or anything like that. Just a pair of speakers. I have 2x30w RMS Sony's I pulled from a stereo, says 8ohm, multimeter shows 6ohm, full range shielded... if they sound cruddy, probably will grab a basic pair of 2-ways, like Kenwood KFC-1665S's... $33CAD a pair off amazon.ca.

And yes, Army of Darkness is great... TV series is pretty good too, though I got a real beef with that season finale episode, the whole time travel thing made 0 sense when he got back to the present. No sense at all.

if the manual says 3-5 amp draw and youre not beating on it, should be fine with that adapter.

I wish we had a Parts Express in Canada. Though is we did, it would be like Amazon... same site, half the stuff.

Absolutely hate finding something I want/need online then realizing I'm on Amazon.com and when I switch to Amazon.ca either the price is way more than just the exchange rate, or .ca doesn't offer it at all.

Parts Express, looked around, and says they **** to Canada but ship estimator never seems to work.

Parts Express and Harbor Freight... both I wish we had here with the same stock. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

oh, yeah i didnt see your location until just now. My bad

Yeah... hence buying a lot of stuff from HK/China.

Even off Amazon lately, half of seems to come from the same sellers as eBay and overseas. Ordered a bunch of small parts for my arcade build the other day and everything came except 1 item that shows end of August. :S
