I called a "private seller" about a car he had listed on Autotrader. I asked him if the car had ever been wrecked and his response was, "uh, not that I know of." I looked up that car on CARFAX and not only had it been wrecked, it had a salvage title.

Point of the thread: never buy used without running CARFAX.

That is all, unless someone has ideas concerning how to properly penalize this bastage.

My brother got a Lexus IS300 from a local dealer and it ran fine for about 4 months then the motor started to have serious problems and turns out it has a bent push rod in the motor. We ran a car facts report after the Lexus dealer told us the bad news; found out it had been impounded because of street racing and then owned by a cop in Flordia. The dealer took it back and gave him most of his money back mainly because my dad has about 8 company vehicals from him. But CARFAX is something that should always be run on used cars!!!

Yeah, I would have liked to have given the benefit of the doubt too. But he called as I was leaving work a little while ago. I told him that I had pulled the report and what it had shown. His immediate response was that it was still a good deal. No hesitation at all. I told him that he and I would never do business together. I also told him that I was going to have other people call him about the car so that he would never know whether the person on the other end of the line already knew about the salvage title. He just said I am sorry you feel that way and hung up.

If an IS300 has a bent pushrod, you have a lot more problems than just that. Sounds like you both are ignorant and get taken very easily.

I felt pretty comfortable about the fact that he knew about the salvage title the whole time. First, his reaction to my question about accidents during our first conversation made me get the feeling he was not telling the truth. Sometimes people are just poor liars. I can tell you the impression I got was strong enough that as soon as I hung up I got on CARFAX. Second, I was fairly certain from the dates the title was issued that he would have been aware.

Nontheless, I did not immediately go off on the guy when I spoke to him today. I just told him what I had found. When his only reaction was to say that I was still getting a good deal I knew that he had been trying to scam me. Any reasonable person in his position that did not already know about the title would have focused on whether what I told him was correct.
