Career Change.. Gettin my CDL's

yeah title says it all. Im 21 now and in need of a well paying job. My last job was 8.50/hr and full of teenage drama. i worked there since I was 16 lol. I have put in 20+ applications with only promises of callbacks with no luck. Im living on my savings and my wife's part time income (she's fulltime student) Im looking into a Trucking school and getting my CDL certification, and Class A license. not really tryin to spend my life on the road but $700-$1000 a week will make life easier. it will pay all our bills, pay our cars off within a year, and i can save up to build a house. shame thats unemployment is at an all-time hi and all our factories are shutting down around here.

man i have went to 2 career centers and 50% of jobs around here are for regional and OTR drivers. its a huge business in this area and everyone is needing drivers. Memphis/Nashville runs alone is major bank.

How do you pay for your "bad ***" car making 8.50 an hour?

car payment is $200/mo insurance is $108 full coverage. I averaged $300 a week after taxes @ 8.50/hr. plus my wife works. cell,internet,satellite, utilities aint real terrible.

get that cdl..try to stay with a big company for at least a year...request a local route though, most big companies have em...as far as slow...well people still need s!@# so as long as they need i t.. ill drive it...but seriously..with a cdl in your pocket it wont be hard to find a job..

Better get that hazmat while you are at it, and become an owner operator...

Be prepared to do OTR for the first 6 months to a year, THEN look for a local route... Bro in law just went through this, and hated it. Still un-employed

It blows my mind that people will pay money to get "trained" to drive a truck. I put in an application with the company I work for with no license (Beer distributor). they told me to go take the test at the DMV on the computer to get my permit (50 Bucks) and they would hire me. I drove on a permit for a few months then went to the DMV and took the driving test. I have a class A CDL and my total investment was 50 dollars. these truck driving schools make me LOL

I did something similar to get mine. But some companies will not hire without having a CDL already. So really what your paying for is the right to use the truck. I agree its the way to go if you can but its not always feasable. I do a little OTR right now as a side job while going to school. It pays pretty well.

When I was looking for work, if I had 20 resumes out in a week, I was seriously slacking. That's three days worth of job searching.

i have a general knowledge/ grant certification test this thursday. if i pass it, ill have my $4250 tuition paid for FREE. i will have to front $200 medical exam and drug screen, when i graduate i will be reimbursed. I'll be either hired for the company i trained with or another local company (theres 20+) 6weeks paid as a driver/trainee

f'd up part is me and my wife separated and im bouncing from friend's house to friend's house. this shits ruff right now
