Car dealerships?

Okay, this may be a dumb question but I've never bought a new car before and I am contemplating it for this summer.

My question is, can you "haggle" a dealership on a new car? I know on used there is often room to negotiate, and of course when dealing with a private seller, but do dealerships negotiate on price? After their buying incentives?

I just don't want to look like an idiot if I try to get the price a little lower and you're not supposed to do that.

In case you're wondering, Looking at the following cars (because they're cheap and I'm a poor college kid):

Chevrolet Cobolt

Toyota Corolla

Pontiac Sunfire

Chevrolet Cavalier

Nissan Sentra

Honda Civic

Saturn Ion

well the worst thing you can do is haggle the dealership and if they say no. Move onto another dealership. It is not like there are only 4 dealerships in the world. Just go to a few that you know you would not buy a car from and pick up on a few things. That way when you go to a good one that you would like to purchase from you know what to do and what not to do.

As far as the choices for cars what are you going for.

Performance?

Looks?

Most mods for?

Comfort?

I'm going mostly for dependability and looks, but it's got to be comfortable. Performance I'm not too worried about (there's really not TOO much difference between my choices), and the same with mods, as I will not be doing them besides to the stereo.

Right now I'm leaning towards the civic, corolla, cobolt, and cavalier...I don't know yet for sure though if I'll even be able to make it work, we'll see.

Forgot to ask .. are cars that a year or two old in the picture? Or are you just looking to purchase brand new?
Slightly used cars are in the picture, but I'd rather go new. I have been looking around quite a bit and most of the time it doesn't seem worth the number miles to trade off for the price.

I'm open for any ideas though, I really want to make the right choice when i do this because it's a large investment for me....I would like it to last through med school...so 6-7 years from now.

EDIT: How does the cobolt drive jtomsic...I will be test driving soon probably, but what did you like/not like about it?

I rather have a used accord than civic..
every muda fuka on the road will wanna race see'n ya drive that civic..
The civics have much better gas mileage which I enjoy, plus the 05 coupes look pretty clean and I won't be ricing it up at all...I will do nothing to the exterior.

if you can wait there is a new 2006 civic SI coupe coming out at the end of

the year... it pretty much looks like the new accord coupes... im almost

pissed off that i bought my car since i couldve gotten the SI for a hell of a lot

cheaper...

the corrolla needs a 3" drop right off the showroom...

my gf has a 2004 sunfire and its a nice car... but around here at least

sunfires are chic cars...

the cobalt looks promising and the cavelier is just a cobalt... but beware

its the first year on the cobalt so who knows how many TSBs are

gonna come up on the new model...

the ION would be a safe choice... havent seen new Sentras... my buddy

has a sentra type R with 2 W3s and it slams...

most important factor is how big a box you can fit into the trunks bulkhead : )

Was actually wanting to wait until the 06's came out so that I could possibly get a deal on the 05's when they are clearing them out. Not TOO worried about looks or getting the 06, I'm going from a gold 1995 camry (chic car if I ever saw one, although I don't mind much) with 250K miles on it...

how could you not want this over a cobalt?!?

anyone wanna buy an accord EX V6???

I think the cobalt probably has the most power. (just guessing tho) Plus its the newests, so it might be different for a little bit. From what I've seen those civics are pretty weak. What one were u looking at like LX EX DX ? I don't know the order, but some of them are hella slow. I test drove one, it didn't have any badge except civic and it seems undrivablet to me. I would get a used v6 accord over that anyday (I want one of the new hybrid ones tho) I think its a tough choice outta those tho, I don't like small cars.

Read this!! I was looking into a job as a sales man but took my old job back because my boss really didnt want me to leave ( its a seasonal job, and he offered me good pay etc to come back) But I had gotten a job offer to be a salesman and I found this while looking into some stuff. It is long but very very interesting to read and learn the tricks the salesman use on people.

hey geoffrey.. was that the new civic SI u posted???? if so, how much is it gonna be?? that thing looks sweeeeet for a honda.. and i say that cuz hondas arent too expensive for the quality!!

When my sister went to college she had a 4 hour drive back home and her car from high school went to straight ****, so my dad got her a new civic(back in 01). I know that when he bought that he got a good chunk knocked off when he bought it, I think like 1500... not bad considering the car is only like 15k(car was bought in 3-01 I believe but was a 2000-new never titled). If I were you I would look into getting a 2002 Nissan Maxima those thing are nice and can be had for 16 at dealership and 14 private party with about 25-30k miles(wonderful car don't know how much it can do for gas mileage, insurance etc against a civic though //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif). Have you checked out the scion tc(i believe). Nice looking car for cheap, never ridden in or drove one though.

??? 15k is too much for a car that is gonna last you over 200k miles if you treat it right?? What should he get a kia? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif.
