Nope. The U S gov said it made black men s e x starved/crazy and made them want to hunt down and molest white women..
That's probably true then. The government wouldn't lie.... though actually I believe that's the line of propaganda they used against cocaine.
Actually, the reason pot was initially made illegal is due to illegal immigration. Just as today, back then it was perceived that there was an illegal Mexican immigration problem, and marijuana was viewed as a 'Mexican drug'. It was thought that if we outlawed marijuana, Mexicans would no longer want to come here.
The really strange part of the story is HOW is was made illegal. Hint: related to the Thompson submachine gun. If you know who Sam Caldwell is, then you know the real story.
Its quite an interesting tale of our government/politicians using less than honest means in order to do what it felt it had to for the best of the population.
Welcome back!
These sort of things have typically a few angles. First and foremost, the people in power don't give a rats arse about "the masses" after election day except for making sure they have enough of a police state/controll system to protect themselves from those masses. To think that any of these nanny-state laws have anything to do with "keeping us safe" flies in the face of all evidence and reality. Those lines are good for getting the easily manipulated masses and rabble behind a cause, but at the end of the day, these people care only about power (or money, which is power in the abstract).
I have always suspected, though I haven't looked into it much since I don't care, that alcohol prohibition had more to do with the oil interests. Looking at the time period and the growth of the automobile industry, if you're sitting on a million acres of oil wells and fefining infrestructure, do you want people running their car with something that any farmer can make at home, or with your oil?
Anyway, there's plenty of industries that are threatened by legal hemp, including big pharma, lumber, paper, chemical, oil, liquor, textiles, and more. Not saying I'd smoke the stuff, but it really does have a lot of uses and it's being illegal is completely absurd.
Follow the money. What the history books show us are a bunch of demonstraters and do-gooders, but they NEVER seem to explain who is financing these people. It's a little discussed fact that people who spend their days marching in the streets, demonstrating, and rabble rousing don't have jobs.
