like 30 yrs ago when dna evidence and politically correct juries didnt exist. now its almost impossible to get a jury to convict when they know they are getting the death penalty. i always hear about these retards pleading down to avoid to death penalty and its sick.
like that ***** casey anthony that killed her daughter. she should get the death penalty but she wont.

and if after 20 years of appeals you still cant prove you didnt do it you deserve to die.
So are you arguing that the system is perfect? Because if it is anything less than that i fail to understand how you can be comfortable granting it the ultimate power to kill.

Improvements in forensic science is not a very impressive reason for support of the death penatly. On the contrary, the increasing number of exonerations due to DNA evidence begins to shed light on just how flawed our justice system is. The fact is that most cases dont actually leave behind any type of DNA evidence that allows you to conclusively state whether a defendant is guilty or innocent. So what about those people?

The national average number of excutions per exoneration is only 8

One of the biggest factors that turned me against the death penalty was realizing how much power is in the hands of the prosecutor. The juries only see what evidence the prosecutor and defense show them. All that has to happen is for that one prosecutor to hide exculpatory evidence from the defense (which happens disturbingly frequent in criminal cases) and the jury may leave the courtroom convinced that an innocent person is guilty.

Not to mention all the money wasted on keeping these people alive.

CaliforniaIndiana

Total cost of Indiana's death penalty is 38% greater than the total cost of life without parole sentences

A study by Indiana's Criminal Law Study Commission found this to be true, assuming that 20% of death sentences are overturned and resentenced to life. (Indiana Criminal Law Study Commission, "Commission Report on Capital Sentencing," January 10, 2002)

The death penalty in this country is a broken system that is of rising concern to many Americans. The public places great demands on the death penalty and yet has become increasingly aware that, as currently imposed, the penalty is a costly failure that does not serve the purposes for which it was established and risks taking the lives of innocent people. (See Part I above.)
Our earlier report documented these costs and risks. It showed that serious error is widespread and chronic. This is true no matter how conservatively one counts the number of judicially reversible mistakes the death penalty system makes. A review of our methods in this Report shows that we defined serious mistakes cautiously and counted them so conservatively that we excluded a number of death verdicts imposed on people who were innocent.970 Even defined this narrowly, capital error rates were 50% or more in nearly all death-sentencing states and years. Because such error keeps death verdicts from being carried out,971 this finding means that most states have failure rates above 50%. Nationally, the average failure rate is a nearly 70%; and capital verdicts in many states and counties fail at rates of 80%, 90% and even 100%. Over the 23-year course of our study from 1973 to 1995, barely 5% of the 5800 death verdicts that were imposed were carried out. During that period, the average time from death sentence to execution was 9 years. Today, given the exacting review needed to catch so much error, that delay averages 12 years.
The very last point is the most important one. Over decades and across dozens of states, large numbers and proportions of capital verdicts have been reversed because of serious error. The capital system is collapsing under the weight of that error, and the risk of executing the innocent is high. Now that explanations for the problem have been identified, and a range of options for responding to it are available, the time has come to fix the death penalty, or end it.

Yeah, not sure how they would feel if they were the innocent one sitting on death row. I don't think anyone has the right to say who lives, and who dies. I'd rather see someone like Osama sit in prison for the rest of their life than let them think they are going to get to heaven, and have a bunch of virgins or whatever.

My only gripe with canada is that we're too accepting of other cultures.

when you move into the US you become an american...

when you move into canada, you're still what you were before you got here.

It's just frustrating when you walk into a "brown" area, for example, and people stare at you... almost as if they're saying you don't belong here.

Also, what's with your iced tea? it's actually cold tea with no sugar.

BTW, all of you americans that talk shit about canada can eat my balls. our strippers can get completely ****.

Yes, I agree with these statements. Our lawmakers need to grow at least a small spine and stand up for the many when the few attempts to bend the rules to their liking.

exactly, thats why someone who murders someone deserves to die.

like i said before. if you are innocent and in 20 yrs worth of appeals you cant prove your innocence then sorry bout your luck.....

so just because something isnt full proof we should just give up on the legal system all together? the only way to make sure we know who does what and when would be to install cameras everywhere but then the whole "big brother" issue starts and blah blah blah.

hell id rather be put to death on accident than sit behind bars everyday of my life knowing everyday i didnt do it. that would piss me off even worse.

and i know, "if you were that innocent person behind bars you wouldnt think that way" and ur right i probably wouldnt. but being that person that stays out of trouble and is probably going to never be in a situation where someone could mistake me for a murderer im not going to worry about it and thats my stance.

and this isnt a thread about death penalty, although we turned it into one..........

i vote +1 for USA

What's wrong with the death penalty is that we have killed inocent people, and that's a fact.
This

There is still chance of wrongful conviction today. Since that chance exist, I am not comfortable with the death penalty.

It isn't that I can't agree those who are guilty, deserve to die. I just can't live with the possibility that an innocent may be killed as well.

exactly, thats why someone who murders someone deserves to die.So 2 wrongs do make a right.

like i said before. if you are innocent and in 20 yrs worth of appeals you cant prove your innocence then sorry bout your luck.....I am not comfortable at all with killing people who have bad luck. Barbaric thought isstrong in you.

so just because something isnt full proof we should just give up on the legal system all together? the only way to make sure we know who does what and when would be to install cameras everywhere but then the whole "big brother" issue starts and blah blah blah. No one said give up. We say give up on the capital punishment. Who said get rid of the law? You are just hitting irrationality now.

hell id rather be put to death on accident than sit behind bars everyday of my life knowing everyday i didnt do it. that would piss me off even worse.Well, that's you. Then hang yourself when they convict you. I would rather fight my innocence until my very last breath.

and i know, "if you were that innocent person behind bars you wouldnt think that way" and ur right i probably wouldnt. but being that person that stays out of trouble and is probably going to never be in a situation where someone could mistake me for a murderer im not going to worry about it and thats my stance.

Have you been to america lately?

Hell, apparently they are making drivers licenses in spanish now. Some neighborhoods around chicago all the billboards are in spanish.

America is way too accepting as well. Back in the early immigration days people used to make an effort to learn english and the culture, nowadays immigrants want everything handed to them in their language.

This reminds me of a shirt I saw on tshirthell.com
