Can you navigate your phone's music app via Bluetooth?

I'm looking into getting a Bluetooth head unit, so I can connect it to my phone via Bluetooth. One you are connected, how exactly do you control the music via your head unit? If you are using the Pandora app on your phone (my phone is an Android for example), does your head unit have controls to skip songs, etc? Or do you have to go back to your phone to do stuff like that? If you are using a different music app, like Google Music for example, can you navigate between Artists on your headunit and pick different albums and playlists?

Make sure both the head unit and your phone support the AVRCP protocol. Then it depends on if your music app is set to allow remote input. I use an Android phone and Winamp. I had to tell Winamp to let it receive commands and then I was able to play/pause and change tracks with my head unit. I navigate folders and such on my phone.

Most bluetooth HUs will allow you to control your device from the actual HU. For example... I use my iPhone4S and my iPod to play music and am able to connect via bluetooth or directly using a USB chord. When I use pandora i can skip and rate songs, and change custome stations using both my phone AND HU which is pretty clutch. This is when i am connected with bluetooth or directly to the HU doesnt matter. When i use my iPod i connect with my USB bc it doesnt have BT compatibility but works just the same meaning i can control everything from the HU. When using the iPod i can even scroll through my artists and then albums (i have all my music files neatly organized) which is great.
