I understand by tuning Low with a ported box subs should maintain more SQ right? then how come Ive heard that for rock music tuning high is best? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eyebrow.gif.fe2c18d8720fe8c7eaed347b21ea05a5.gif

But what is the relationship between ported box size and SQ, am I right in thinking smaller boxes would have tighter responce and larger boxes more output with less QTC?

smaller boxes does tend to resonant at a higher frequency, and bigger boxes do tend to resonant at a lower frequency, but both has it place in the car audio world,if you want the best medium,i would do a box that resonants around 38-40 hz.

So reguardless of port tuning a smaller box will tune high and bigger tune low? doesnt seem right... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eyebrow.gif.fe2c18d8720fe8c7eaed347b21ea05a5.gif

i think that is becayse rock utilizes higher freq bass generally then rap/hip-hop does, so a note that is closer to tuning freq of your box should sound better
So... if I wanted to port my 12" Brahma with the tightest SQ possible, listening mostley to Hard rock, country Would I tune high or low?

with the same size port yes this is correct. for a smaller box you need a longer port to achieve the same tuning as a larger box

rock usually has faster drum beats or double bass, meaning it will need faster response. while a port may not actually change the response time of the speaker, it can give it more of a boomy sound you would expect from rap in a low tuned box. it may seem as though the subs arent keeping up., when really its just so low tuned, youre not telling the difference from beat to beat. country is usually much slower, and they often use an actual bass instrument, which is long drawn out tunes which are well suited for low frequency. remember though, you can never go wrong tuning in the mid range somewhere. some who tune to 30 would disagree, but i personally think 40 hz gives good boom, while still getting fairly loud on a microphone or for those higher needed notes. i actually listen to a 51 hz box for daily (when i have subs.) thats just me though.

51hz, wow, someone doesn't like his lows... That's like having a huge midbass!

yeah i know. its the spl box, which is gigantic on the outside, and not easily changeable for the frequency. i dont think it sounds that bad really, but yeah you guys would not like it. if nothing else when i need some sq, i could stuff the port and have a large sealed box and see how it sounds. i dont even know how this new box will sound, it doesnt have subs in it yet. but, every box ive had in the last year i built to around 51 Hz. not reccommended for daily, lol.

**** 51hz is up there //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif The brahma id just seal up personally, if you want a bit more lows, try 2 cubes tuned to about 35-38hz but id be very cautious of how much power im sending it that box. Say 500rms & gains set right should do fine.
